Ask most soon-to-be seven-year-olds what they want for their birthday, and you’ll most likely hear a never-ending list of toys and games. Ask Elena Borio her birthday wish, and this little girl will tell you that she just wants to help someone.
In lieu of the usual birthday presents, Elena asked everyone she knew to make a donation that she would then give to the charity of her choosing. Seizing the opportunity to help their daughter learn about philanthropy, Elena’s parents taught her about the wide range of causes that many local charities support. “Some charities work with children,” Elena’s mother, Amy, explained, “others work with people, and there are others that work with animals.”I want one that works with animals,” decided Elena—in particular, dogs.
As West Hartford residents, the Borio’s were familiar with Fidelco’s foster puppies and trainers who often visit West Hartford Center. By choosing a local charity like Fidelco, Amy felt that Elena would see how she could make a difference and help others.
When Elena and her family visited the Fidelco campus to drop off their donation of more than $300, they were thrilled to meet several Fidelco guide dogs as well as George Salpietro, Fidelco’s executive director, and “Yola,” his guide dog. On bended knee, George carefully explained to Elena just how special she is and how much her kindness will mean to someone like him who relies on a guide dog to live their life each and every day.
Elena shared her enthusiasm and gratitude with everyone who contributed to her very special birthday gift. Her thank you note read, “All of us together made a difference and are changing lives.”
